阿什顿·卡特在耶鲁大学和爱丁堡大学获得学士学位，在牛津大学获得理论物理博士学位。
2009年4月27日至2011年10月5日，担任美国国防部采购、技术和后勤副部长（Under Secretary of Defense for Acquisition, Technology and Logistics）。
2015年2月17日至2017年1月20日，担任第25任美国国防部部长。
